Stored in your browser
The game keeps your progress on your own device: an anonymous random ID, your word history, daily results, personal bests, and your sound and theme choices. It never leaves your browser except as described below. Clearing your browser data resets all of it. On a Teacher Mode student page, a name you type is kept in that browser tab while you play; when you submit your result, that name is sent with the challenge result and stored as described below.
EL/LA’s own analytics
To improve the game, EL/LA counts how it is used: games started and finished, which modes are played, how words are answered (correct or not, and how fast), and Practice, Challenge a Friend and Teacher Mode usage. Some of these analytics are associated with the anonymous browser ID above; none are tied to a name or an email address. On a first visit EL/LA also records the day, the name of the referring site if any, and the campaign tag in the link you came from, if any.
Teacher Mode and feedback
A Teacher Mode challenge, including the names students type when they play it, is stored on our server for 30 days and then expires. Only someone with the teacher’s private results link can see it. If you send feedback, the message, the optional email you choose to add, your anonymous browser ID and the page you were on are stored so the feedback can be read.
Vercel Web Analytics
The site is hosted on Vercel and uses Vercel Web Analytics for lightweight, cookie-free counts of page views and where visits come from.
Google Analytics
EL/LA may use Google Analytics (GA4) for aggregate measurement of how people find and use the site: page views, the campaign tags in links, engagement time, device and browser type, and approximate location. Google Signals and ad personalization are turned off, and the data is kept for up to 14 months.
What Google Analytics does not get:
- any activity on Teacher Mode student pages (
/c/), teacher results pages (/manage/) or the admin pages: nothing is loaded or sent there; - student names or any Teacher Mode challenge data;
- the anonymous browser ID, game results or word-level answers;
- the codes in Challenge a Friend links (those pages are reported only as
/play/[code]), or any link details other than the three campaign tags.
Google Analytics normally sets first-party cookies. In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, analytics storage is switched off by default, so no analytics cookies are set there. Google may still receive limited, cookie-free measurement signals from those visits. Google’s own privacy policy covers what it does with data it receives.
